Spoonflower.com is a sustainable fabric printing platform for artists, designers, and hobbyists to unleash their creativity and bring their unique patterns and designs to life. With Spoonflower, users can upload their artwork, create repeating patterns, and choose from a variety of high-quality fabric options for printing. This platform enables anyone to transform their artistic vision into tangible products.

In order for designs to be made available for sale on Spoonflower, designers have to order proofs. This way we can make sure the colors are exactly how we want them since we all know, the color on our computer screen isn’t necessarily the color that prints. We can also make sure the repeats line up correctly. Sometimes even though we check and check on the screen, once printed, we might find a tiny detail we overlooked. Luckily if we find a mistake or want to correct the colorway, Spoonflower allows us to replace the image with a corrected version and not have to reorder a proof.

Order Proofs

Proofs of fabric designs can be ordered from Spoonflower in many ways. My favorite and most cost-effective is a FAY – or fill a yard. That way I can fill a yard with 42 blocks of different designs. I like to lay them out in the collections I’ve created so if I want to sew those blocks into a quilt or bag or something else that only takes a yard of fabric. It’s easy peasy since they’re already together and just need a bit of stitching.

Why Print-On-Demand Fabric is Sustainable

  1. Reduced Waste: Print-on-demand eliminates the need for large-scale manufacturing and excess inventory. Fabrics are printed only when orders are received, minimizing waste from overproduction and reducing the environmental impact.
  2. Efficient Resource Utilization: By printing fabrics on demand, the amount of water, energy, and chemicals used in the production process can be optimized. Traditional fabric manufacturing often involves significant resource consumption, but print-on-demand allows for more efficient utilization of these resources.
  3. Design Flexibility: With print-on-demand, designers can create unique and customized fabric designs. This encourages individual creativity and reduces the reliance on mass-produced fabrics, leading to a more diverse and sustainable fashion and design industry.
  4. Reduced Overstock and Waste: Print on demand avoids the problem of unsold inventory and textile waste. Traditional manufacturing often leads to surplus fabric that goes unused, contributing to landfill waste. With print on demand, fabrics are created as needed, minimizing this issue.

Overall, print-on-demand services like Spoonflower provide a sustainable fabric printing alternative to traditional textile production methods. They promote eco-conscious practices, reduce waste, offer design freedom, and contribute to the shift towards a more sustainable and personalized approach to fabric creation.
