The History of Snuffleupagus
Snuffy made his first appearance in 1971 on Sesame Street. However, back then, only Big Bird could see him. For over a decade, adults on Sesame Street believed Snuffy was imaginary. This running gag frustrated viewers, especially kids, who felt unheard. Eventually, in 1985, the producers decided to make Snuffy visible to everyone.
Why the change? Because Sesame Street wanted to teach children that adults will listen and believe them. This moment became a landmark in children’s television history. It also helped boost the show’s message of trust, communication, and emotional intelligence.
Who Played and Voiced Snuffy?

Snuffy is a two-person puppet. That’s right, it takes teamwork to bring him to life! The original performers were Jerry Nelson (voice) and Michael Earl Davis (puppet front). Soon after, Martin P. Robinson took over the puppet role. He’s also known for voicing Telly Monster. Robinson has performed as Snuffy for over 40 years! Snuffleupagus’s voice is low-pitched, gentle, and slightly lumbering, which aligns with his calm and endearing personality. The voice conveys a sense of innocence and thoughtfulness, often emphasizing his childlike curiosity and emotional depth. This vocal style helps make Snuffy relatable to children while maintaining his fantastical, larger-than-life presence
How the Snuffleupagus Puppet Works
Creating Snuffy wasn’t easy. In fact, it’s one of the most complex puppets on Sesame Street. Snuffy is made of carved foam, synthetic fur, and a custom fabric blend. His eyelashes are individually crafted to match his sleepy look. The puppet weighs around 100 pounds and stands over 10 feet long.
Because of his weight, it takes two puppeteers inside the costume to operate it. One controls the head and trunk, while the other handles the back and legs. Even walking as Snuffy requires incredible coordination and physical strength. Despite its size, the puppet was designed for flexibility and expression.
