Harry Potter Book Day

Calling all witches, wizards, Muggles and proud Hogwarts students! Harry Potter Book Day is the perfect excuse to celebrate one of the most beloved book series of all time. While the official 2026 celebration took place on October 8, (and several sources list it as October 12) there is no reason the magic has to disappear once the date passes. This year’s official theme was Spells and Potions, making it especially easy to turn your home into a little corner of Hogwarts. The official celebration encourages readers of all ages to enjoy decorations, costumes, activities and games. So why not throw your own Harry Potter party?

Pick Your Hogwarts House
Every Hogwarts student belongs somewhere. Are you brave enough for Gryffindor? Ambitious enough for Slytherin? Clever enough for Ravenclaw? Or loyal enough for Hufflepuff? The Sorting Hat places students into four Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff.

You don’t even have to choose just one house for your party. Set up four tables or decorating areas and let your guests show their allegiance. Of course, if you’re hosting a Harry Potter party for a group of friends, you could always have a Sorting Hat ceremony first.Once everyone knows their house, it’s time to celebrate.
Celebrate Every Hogwarts House
If you’re looking for inspiration, we’ve already explored each Hogwarts house in our House Pride Day articles.
Hufflepuff Pride Day on March 20 honors loyalty, patience and hard work.
Slytherin Pride Day on March 21 embraces ambition, resourcefulness and cunning.
Gryffindor Pride Day on March 22 celebrates courage, bravery and determination.
Ravenclaw Pride Day on March 23 celebrates intelligence, creativity and curiosity.
Each house has its own personality, colors and famous members. You can click on the links above and explore all four House Pride celebrations and use them as inspiration for your party decorations, food, games and costumes. That also gives your guests something to argue about. Because no Harry Potter party is complete without someone insisting that the Sorting Hat got it wrong.
Turn Your Home Into Hogwarts
You don’t need a Great Hall or a Hogwarts-sized budget to create a magical atmosphere. Start with the house colors. Gryffindor gets scarlet and gold. Slytherin gets green and silver. Ravenclaw gets blue and bronze, while Hufflepuff gets yellow and black.

Add candles, stars, old books, potion bottles and handwritten signs. You could even create a Hogwarts-style welcome sign for your front door. For the tables, use house-colored napkins, plates and cups. Add simple labels such as “Potions,” “Butterbeer” or “Honeydukes.” And don’t forget the pets aka familiars, owls, toads, rats and more. Well, perhaps skip the live ones.
Plan a Magical Feast
Harry Potter gives you plenty of inspiration for food and drinks. Serve pumpkin juice, butterbeer, chocolate frogs and other wizarding treats. You can also create your own Muggle-friendly versions of Hogwarts favorites.

For something especially fun, turn ordinary snacks into potions. Use glass bottles or jars and add handwritten potion labels. Colored drinks, sparkling water, fruit punch, and candy can become magical concoctions with names like Felix Felicis, Polyjuice Potion or Amortentia.
Add a Little House Pride
Want to make the party more competitive? Divide your guests into their Hogwarts houses and award points throughout the party, just like professors do to Hogwarts students.

Trivia questions can earn points. So can costumes, house-themed snacks, Harry Potter charades or a Hogwarts scavenger hunt. You could even award the House Cup at the end of the evening. And yes, you should absolutely keep score. After all, Hogwarts takes its House Cup very seriously.
Make Harry Potter Book Day a Reading Celebration

Most importantly, don’t forget the books. Harry Potter Book Day celebrates reading, so set aside time to revisit your favorite book in the series. You could read favorite passages aloud, have a Harry Potter book club discussion, or ask guests which book they think made the best transition to the movies. That last question could lead to some lively conversation.
