In honor of June 3 being 603 Day—a day to honor New Hampshire—a day named after the state’s iconic area code, I added some new purple lilac designs to my fabric collection inspired by New Hampshire State Symbols.

Lilacs

The state of New Hampshire is where resilience and natural beauty intertwine. According to New Hampshire historian Leon Anderson, the journey of the Purple Lilac began in 1750 when it was imported from England and planted at the Portsmouth home of Governor Benning Wentworth. Fast forward to 1919, and this fragrant flower officially claimed its title as the state’s flower. A lively debate ensued as various contenders vied for the prestigious position, including the apple blossom, purple aster, and wood lily. However, it was the Purple Lilac’s enduring charm and symbolic significance that ultimately won hearts, representing the hardy spirit of the Granite State’s people.

Imagine strolling through the picturesque landscapes of New Hampshire, surrounded by the delicate fragrance of Purple Lilacs in full bloom. It’s no wonder these enchanting flowers were chosen as the state’s official flower, symbolizing the beauty and resilience of the Granite State.

If you’re a fan of the beautiful state of New Hampshire, you might like the other fabrics in our collection featuring more symbols of the state of NH – the Red Spotted Newt, Pink Lady Slipper, Karner Blue Butterfly, Ladybugs, and Brook Trout.
