The Purple Finch

New Hampshire officially named the Purple Finch (Haemorhous purpureus) as its state bird in 1957, recognizing its delicate beauty and melodic song. Found throughout the state, especially in mixed coniferous forests, this species thrives here year-round .
Look for them at feeders munching sunflower, ash, and elm seeds, or flitting through forest edges with their graceful undulating flight. Their populations can fluctuate in winter depending on northern seed availability—a delightful surprise for backyard birdwatchers.
Fun Facts
- Despite their name, Purple Finches are more raspberry-red than true purple.
- Their strong, conical beaks are built for crushing seeds—powerful for such small birds.
- Since the 1960s, their numbers dipped but have stabilized after House Finch declines.
- They often join mixed flocks—like Pine Siskins and Goldfinches.
- These songbirds warble a rich, complex tune and were once kept as cage birds for their voice.
