As a passionate pickleball player and a lover of all things Stephen King, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to blend the eerie allure of The Shining with the fun and excitement of pickleball. My graphic design creation reinterprets the iconic twins from The Shining as pickleball-loving skeletons, perfectly capturing the haunting yet playful vibe that fans of the story will appreciate.

But before we dive into the details of my design, let’s take a look at how The Shining made its chilling journey from page to screen—and how the twins became one of horror’s most unsettling symbols.

From Stephen King’s Novel to the Big Screen

The Shining is one of Stephen King’s most well-known and terrifying novels. Published in 1977, the book tells the story of Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic who takes a job as the winter caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel. Accompanied by his wife, Wendy, and his son, Danny—who has a psychic ability known as “the shining”—Jack slowly descends into madness, influenced by the hotel’s malevolent forces.

In 1980, Stanley Kubrick adapted the novel into a feature film, starring Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance and Shelley Duvall as Wendy. While the movie has become a classic in its own right, it famously diverged from the source material in significant ways, much to the dismay of Stephen King. Kubrick’s interpretation of the story emphasized psychological horror and added surreal, ambiguous elements, such as the hedge maze and the unsettling twins, who were not present in the book in the same way.

The 1997 TV Mini-Series: A More Faithful Adaptation

Stephen King's The Shining mini series starting Steven Weber and Rebecca De Mornay.

In 1997, King took the opportunity to create a more faithful adaptation of his novel in the form of a TV mini-series, directed by Mick Garris. This version starred Steven Weber as Jack Torrance and Rebecca De Mornay as Wendy. Unlike Kubrick’s film, the mini-series stayed closer to the book’s narrative, retaining many of the elements and themes that King felt were essential to the story.

King has been vocal about his dislike for Kubrick’s film, criticizing it for its coldness and the way it depicted Jack Torrance as insane from the start, rather than showing his gradual decline. In contrast, King was heavily involved in the production of the mini-series, ensuring that it stayed true to his original vision.

The Grady Twins: A Haunting Presence

One of the most iconic and terrifying aspects of Kubrick’s film adaptation is the appearance of the Grady twins. Although in the book, the hotel’s previous caretaker, Delbert Grady, had murdered his wife and two daughters, the movie reimagines these daughters as eerie, ghostly twins who beckon to Danny with the chilling phrase, “Come play with us, Danny. Forever… and ever… and ever.” Played by Lisa and Louise Burns, the twins’ unsettling symmetry and deadpan delivery left a lasting impression on audiences, solidifying their place in horror history.

Despite not being a major part of the book, the twins became one of the most memorable and disturbing images from the film, symbolizing the Overlook Hotel’s dark and twisted influence over its inhabitants.

Bringing the Twins to the Pickleball Court

As a graphic designer, I’m always looking for ways to bring unique and unexpected elements into my creations. Coupling my love for horror books and movies with my pickleball addiction I’ve reimagined the Grady Twins them as skeletons in their iconic blue dresses, but with a pickleball twist. In my design, the twins are holding pickleball paddles that feature the infamous Overlook Hotel rug pattern and the hedge maze, both of which played significant roles in Kubrick’s film. The tagline, “Come play with us,” is a playful nod to their eerie invitation in the movie, now inviting you to join the fun on the pickleball court.

This design isn’t just for horror fans—it’s for anyone who loves to stand out on the court with gear that’s as bold and unique as their game. Whether you’re a fan of The Shining, an avid pickleball player, or both, these graphics are a perfect way to show off your love for the game with a touch of spooky flair.
